Nearly 100 Inmates At A Jail Housing Sex Offenders Test Positive For COVID-19

Around 100 people at a sex offenders prison have tested positive for Covid-19 after an outbreak of the virus.

The HMP Ashfield, in Pucklechurch, South Gloucestershire, carried out mass testing on prisoners at the site, which holds 400 inmates. Those affected are now self-isolating inside the Category C prison after the virus was detected last week.

The news comes as the UK yesterday announced its highest ever daily coronavirus case number as the highly-transmissible Omicron variant continues to rise.

Prison director of HMP Ashfield Martin Booth told the BBC staff were 'cautiously optimistic' further transmission was now contained and that the priority was to 'keep everyone safe' inside the Serco-run prison.

He added that more than 90 percent of the inmates were double-jabbed.
