Joan Laporta on Sunday, March 7 won the FC Barcelona presidential election to become the club’s new president for a second term by a landslide margin, receiving over 54.28% of the total votes cast.

Joan Laporta, a lawyer with his own firm amassed 54.28% – 30,184 votes, Victor Font came second with 29.99% – 16,679 votes and Antoni Freixa 8.58% – 4,769 votes

The Spanish politician was the club’s president between 2003 to 2010 and oversaw one of the most successful eras in the club, an era where two of the greatest players of all time, Ronaldinho and Messi played for the club.

He edged out closest rival Victor Font and Toni Freixa in an election that had a turn out of 55,611 votes which represents 50.48% of the registered members of the club and of which about 20,000 were mailed in ballots due to coronavirus.

His immediate responsibility would be to ease the crisis at the Catalan club by solving the financial crisis at the club, most importantly get Lionel Messi whose contract expires at the end of the season to sign a new contract.
