Tragedy struck at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife, Osun State on Friday when a 300-level student, Omotola Akorede of the Department of Microbiology slumped and subsequently died while playing football.

The incident occurred at the university training pitch and all efforts to resuscitate him were abortive.
He was said to have been rushed to the university medical center for first aid treatment but gave up the ghost at the center.
The incident threw the entire university into a sorrowful mood even as the university confirmed it.
It was gathered that Akorede was playing left-back during a novelty match and suddenly fell down while standing with fellow defenders, started having breathing difficulty and was rushed to the health center, where he later died.
The University Registrar Margaret Omasule, in a statement, confirmed the sad development saying all medical measures taken to save the student’s life proved abortive.
“I regret to inform the university community that one of our students, a part three student in the Department of Microbiology, Omotola Akorede Kayode, died suddenly this morning, Friday, 17th of May, 2019.
“The report had it that the student was playing football with his colleagues when he suddenly slumped. He was subsequently rushed to the health center where he was confirmed dead on arrival. All resuscitation measures proved abortive,” she said.
One of the students who witnessed the incident said “Korede slumped on OAU training pitch this morning. We were playing a novelty match. He was playing left-back and he was standing alone when he fell down, nobody touched him; he was standing with his fellow defenders.
“He slumped and started having breathing difficulty. We tried to give him CPR but nobody had much knowledge about it. Just after a few minutes, he was rushed to the health center immediately in a fellow student’s car. He was still alive and fighting to catch his breath when we got to the health center. He died at the health center and not before reaching the center.”
