Suffolk Police arrest a driver over reckless driving

Driver arrested after freight train smashes car with a baby still inside

The Suffolk Police say they have arrested a driver after a car, with a baby still inside, collided with a freight train at a rail crossing in Suffolk.

Reports reaching us by the Suffolk Police said that the victim suffered ‘potentially serious injuries’ in the incident at a crossing in Thorpe Lane, Trimley St Martin.

Police were alerted at 11.15am and emergency services, including ambulance and fire crews, rushed to the scene. Sergeant Julian Ditcham said a man had been arrested on suspicion on dangerous driving.

Both he and the young girl were taken to a local hospital, but the child’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.

Local resident Lloyd Welham said he got the child out of the car. He told Ipswich Star:

‘I jumped across the carriages to where the car was and there was someone there shouting “get the baby out” and I realized there was a baby in there.

‘I got the baby out of the car and passed the baby across the carriages to someone on the safe side and then I picked the driver up who was lying next to the car and looked after him until the paramedics got there.

’Greater Anglia warned passengers that ‘all lines are blocked’ and to expect disruption until the end of the day following the incident between Derby Road and Trimley.

A statement on its website said that disruption may happen on all routes, adding: ‘Passengers are advised that a freight train has struck a road vehicle on a level crossing between Derby Road and Trimley. ‘The line between Ipswich and Felixstowe will be suspended until the close of service.’
