Neymar joins Lionel Messi in Cristiano Ronaldo's shadow after Mexico stun Germany
It was another jam-packed day of World Cup football and the two favourites for the tournament, Germany and Brazil, slipped up in their opening matches.

Germany were peremptory as they swept aside all opposition four years ago, but a crushing 1-0 defeat at the hands of Mexico was not the start Joachim Low had planned in Russia. Hirving Lozano’s stunning effort in the 35th minute at the Luzhniki Stadium quite literally sent shockwaves around the world.

Celebrations following Lozano’s winner caused a minor earthquake in Mexico City and, in Moscow, Germany had no answers.

Serbia came away with a 1-0 victory in the opening match of the day, but manager Mladen Krstajic has plenty to work on ahead of their clash with Switzerland in Group E.

Performance of the day
Mexico undoubtedly produced the performance of the day with a convincing 1-0 victory over World Cup holders Germany. Low’s side made a shambolic start to their campaign as the side’s superstars flattered to deceive against Juan Carlos Osorio’s underdogs.

Germany could have conceded more goals, with Mexico wasting a number of goalscoring opportunities on the counter-attack the second-half.

Lozano’s pace, in particular, caused Germany’s experienced defence all sorts of problems. Could the PSV speedster be the breakout star of the World Cup this summer?

Matic told to 'f**k off' by Costa Rica star as Man Utd midfielder sparks mass brawl
Picture of the day
Serbia saw off Costa Rica with a hard-fought win in Group E and a number of Premier League stars were on show at the Samara Arena.

Nemanja Matic produced a familiar no-nonsense display in the middle of the park and was involved in a scuffle towards the end of the match.

The Manchester United midfielder was angered as Luis Marin grabbed the ball and squared up to Costa Rica’s head coach on the touchline. Within seconds, Costa Rica’s entire squad charged towards Matic and pushing and shoving ensued.
